Work Based Learning Providers work together to make
sure local young people can take up the best opportunities
and jobs anywhere in Liverpool. They can put you in touch
with other organisations in the City.

Riverside has produced this leaflet to encourage young
people to make the best choices and find the support they
need to succeed in their chosen careers.
We offer Entry to Employment (e2e) courses and
Apprenticeships in Early Years work.
We can help young people to start a career in Childcare
including jobs in nurseries, schools or as a nanny.
Work Based Learning leads to
Qualifications and Jobs

Work Based Learning qualifications offer young people
practical and flexible courses leading into good jobs and
careers. Courses can last up to two years, with time for young
people to work at their own pace. They often start off with a
training provider and progress into real work experience and
paid employment. No previous qualifications are needed to
take part in some of the courses on offer.

How Work Based Learning Courses
compare to GCSEs, A-Levels and BTECs

Young people always have the chance to get essential
qualifications. Occupational qualifications and Apprenticeships
are as valuable as GCSEs and A-Levels as the table below
shows – and they can be gained in settings outside of school.

ALL routes can lead to….Jobs….University
….Successful Careers for Life
Occupational/
Level School Apprenticeships
Level 1 GCSE grade D-E NVQ Level 1
Level 2 5 GCSEs Grade A*-C Apprenticeship, Level 2
Level 3 2 A-Levels Advanced Apprenticeship, Level 2
Work Based Learning Courses are:

Entry to Employment (‘e2e’) is for 16 -18 year olds to prepare for work.
Young people can join at any time and their study will be tailored to their needs. With anything
from 16 to 40 hours a week on the programme, young people learn key skills (English and Maths),
vocational, personal and social development and get to experience the workplace.

Apprenticeships combine employment with training towards NVQ qualifications.
Young people are based with an employer, gaining experience and earning money. Apprenticeships
are advertised through employers and work based learning providers.

Work Based Learning . . . Pays Money
Young people on Work Based Learning courses may be able to access funding:
The Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA) is worth up to £30 a week (this
does not affect any benefits the household may receive)
Care to Learn provides childcare costs for young mothers (and sometimes
fathers]
Travel pass (if eligible)
Employed Apprentices earn from £80 per week
